2 Days Gorilla Trekking Safari Experience
Daily Itinerary
Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your safari begins with arrival in Kigali, where a professional guide from Kei Tours and Safaris Ltd will welcome you and begin the journey toward Uganda. From Kigali, the drive takes approximately three to four hours as you travel toward the Uganda border through the Cyanika Border Crossing.
After completing the border formalities, you will continue your journey into southwestern Uganda. The route offers breathtaking views of rolling hills, deep valleys, and winding mountain roads. This region is often called the “Pearl of Africa” because of its lush green scenery and tranquil landscapes.
As you approach Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you will notice the thick rainforest that protects one of the world’s most important populations of endangered mountain gorillas. The forest is rich in biodiversity and also home to many bird species, primates, and unique plants.
In the evening, you will check in at Lake Mutanda Lake Resort, a peaceful lodge overlooking the scenic waters of Lake Mutanda and surrounded by the volcanic landscapes of the Virunga region. After dinner, you can relax at the lodge and enjoy traditional entertainment performed by local Ugandan cultural groups. This cultural interaction offers a wonderful introduction to the warm hospitality and traditions of the local communities.
After the evening activities, retire for the night and prepare for the highlight of your safari the following morning.
Gorilla Trekking and Return to Kigali
The second day begins with an early breakfast at the lodge. You will also receive a packed lunch to carry during the trek. After breakfast, your driver guide will transfer you to the park headquarters in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Upon arrival, park rangers will conduct a detailed briefing about gorilla trekking rules and safety guidelines. During this session, visitors learn important instructions on how to behave while trekking and when encountering the gorillas. These guidelines are designed to protect both visitors and the gorillas.
You will then be assigned to a specific gorilla family group along with experienced guides and trackers. Each trekking group usually consists of a small number of visitors to ensure minimal disturbance to the gorillas.
The trek itself can take between four to five hours depending on the location of the gorilla family on that particular day. As you move through dense vegetation and forest trails, your guides will help interpret the environment and point out wildlife signs along the way.
Finally, you will reach the gorilla family in their natural habitat. This moment is truly unforgettable. Visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing the gorillas from a safe distance. During this time, you can take photographs and watch the gorillas interact, feed, groom each other, and care for their young. Seeing these gentle giants up close is an emotional and powerful wildlife experience that many travelers describe as life-changing.
After the one-hour viewing period, you will trek back to the park headquarters where you will receive a certificate acknowledging your participation in the gorilla trekking experience.
Later in the afternoon, your driver will begin the return journey to Kigali, again crossing the Cyanika Border Crossing. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be transferred to the airport for your international departure flight, marking the end of your memorable gorilla trekking safari.
